Safely Home

I am home in heaven, dear ones;
oh, so happy and so bright!
There is a perfect joy and
beauty in the everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over,
every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
safely home in heaven at last.

(First verse of a Catholic Prayer for the Dead)

(Thursday October 23, 2014, Queens, NYC)  On that fateful day 13 years ago St. Peter found himself a bit overwhelmed as thousands of dust cloaked, breathless, tired and confused New Yorkers suddenly congregated outside the Pearly Gates.  They were accountants and auditors, actuaries and administrators.  In their ranks were fire fighters and file clerks; maintenance men and police men.  It was not a motley crew by any stretch of the imagination.  Not at all.  Actually, it was a broad and wide mob of folks from the New York City Metropolitan Area who worked in our famed Twin Towers, the World Trade Center; those giant elevens that anchored Lower Manhattan for many years.  Those that perished there that day were swiftly ushered into heaven; a better place, a place of much needed respite.  Most likely there was one hell of a party up there that night given all the new residents had lived through to get there.

For many, that was the sum total of the day.  For those not related or connected directly to those who had died that day, it was a one-time massive tragedy of epic proportions.  The sights, sounds and smell of it still linger in the deepest recesses of those who survived the twin collapses or spent time on the rescue efforts that consumed all involved for as long as it took to come to terms with the fact that there would be no “rescue”; it would all be about the recovery of dead bodies.  Even all these years later surviving spouses and children awake in the middle of the night feeling the unscratchable itch of a phantom limb; the painful sensation of a husband, wife, mom or dad, brother or sister, coworker, colleague or friend, who was killed in that horrific murderous, evil act. Many of those who perpetrated that wickedly successful atrocity soon found out that Allah didn’t have 72 virgins waiting for them in whatever afterlife vermin such as them wind up in.

Cruelly, although the first blood in our battle against Muslim extremists was spilled on our soil, and the death toll of that day was too awful for many to comprehend at the time and to this day, the death toll here continues to rise.  Month by month, week by week, like the slow but achingly steady drip of a leaking faucet death continues to visit here and takes another fine and decent soul with him as he exits.

Death was fickle and arbitrary on September 11, 2001.  Circumstance, happenstance and perhaps fate, or an alignment of the celestial bodies determined who survived in the Towers, who managed to escape the surreal madness of that morning and those whose lot was decidedly different.  The stories are legion, they tell a variety of tales; some almost obscenely quirky, others profoundly moving.  The religious would say it was all God’s will and those not possessed of that degree of faith quietly tell them to fuck off or ignore them completely.  For some the balancing act between wrenching grief, raging anger, self-doubt, and reality has consumed far too much of their emotional energy over the past 13 years.  13 years.  That is a long time but that day still burns and blisters the waking and sleeping hours of very many who felt the earth move literally beneath their feet as roiling clouds of the pulverized contents of 220 acres of office space, a million pounds of structural steel, untold metric yards of reinforced concrete, glass, asbestos, wiring, carpet and all the constituent elements of our Towers fell into their own footprints as the world stood witness.  As that raging cloud was shunted violently through the narrow canyons of Lower Manhattan maliciously obscuring the brilliant early autumn sun, every witness tried to gauge the death toll.  But, it was beyond calculation at that point, every New Yorker knew that upwards of 40,000 worked in those Towers daily and there was an enormous subterranean concourse seven stories deep, housing shops of all kinds, eateries and, of course the subways.

By a twist of luck Tuesday September 11, 2001 was an election day in New York City and most New Yorkers tend to vote early before they go to work.  That was indeed fortunate.  Had it been a regular Tuesday the death toll would have been exponentially higher.  Certainly each life lost was precious and the repercussions of those losses ripple through the Metropolitan Area to this day.  Death visited New York on that day not like a silent reaper in the night but as a malevolent purposeful force from out of clear powder blue cloudless skies.  But, death still stalks victims; men and women who spent time in the massive eight  months long efforts to clear the 16 acres debris field in search of human remains and any items that would provide proof positive of an identity of one of the unaccounted for victims.  It was as solemn a task as it was, at times, grisly.

Remarkably, on Friday May 31, 2002 the last remaining segment of structural steel draped with an American flag made its way up the ramp from the bottom of The Pit on a flatbed trailer as Members of the FDNY, NYPD, PAPD and other stood ramrod straight.  The removal of that final piece of one of the Towers was a milestone; it represented the conclusion of what had been a Herculean effort to clear the Site.  During the preceding months as the debris was removed and hauled off to barges that transported much of it to the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island where it was again sifted through with fine tooth combs, hundreds toiled amid the long smoldering wreckage.  Underground fires as well as pockets of flame amid the ground level debris smoldered for months emanating toxins and carcinogens that would eventually make the death too from 9-11-01 an ever increasing number.

FIRST OMINOUS SIGNS OF TROUBLE

220 ACRES OF OFFICE SPACE, CONCRETE, STRUCTURAL STEEL

CARPET, CEILING TILES, OFFICE FURNITURE ALL PULVERIZED

 INTO A MALICIOUS MALIGNANCY CARRYING

ROILING CLOUD

It was not long after that final structural element was gone that the first real troubling signs emerged.  Men and women who had labored on The Pile (Ground Zero seems to be somehow disrespectful) and had no prior history of the symptoms they were presenting with were suddenly experiencing health problems.  At first, most of the effected were not alarmed by the new cough or sluggishness they were now dealing with.  Others did make the connection that their time spent on The Pile was likely the cause of the weight loss, tightness in the chest, lack of appetite and respiratory difficulties.  The FDNY who had lost 343 members on 9-11-01 was beginning to notice the uptick in sick calls and increasing complaints from MOS about their health.  They were not alone.  Steelworkers, Union Tradesmen, Police Officers and others were also beginning to feel that their health was not quite right.

At this point the City was disregarding the notion that these people were getting sick because they had worked on The Pile.  Actually, the EPA and the City continued to deny any correlation for many more months.  Eventually, they had no choice as more and more of the effected began to clinically present with odd carcinomas, almost “exotic” malignancies that were most definitely “out of the ordinary” in some cases.  (The saga of how this situation was handled, the liability, financial responsibility and the City’s negligence and reluctance to admit what was causing these illnesses is an entirely tragically and shameful story for another time).

As the number of the suddenly stricken continued to mount, physicians in the NYC Metropolitan Area began to believe that the cases they were seeing were not “outliers”; that there was indeed a correlation between the diseases they were seeing and their patient population.  There was a significant spike in seeing patients who worked for FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, Department of Sanitation personnel as well as Ironworkers, dump and tow truck drivers, operating engineers and others with some connection to 9-11-01 and the Site.  Multiple Myeloma, liver, stomach, and colon adenocarcinomas with a troubling assortment of primary lung malignancies, pulmonary fibrosis, sarcomas, lymphomas and  leukemia were being positively diagnosed and it was becoming clear, at least to the majority of the medical professionals involved in treating these patients, that there was one common denominator linking them all; they had all been present at The World Trade Center Plaza on 9-11-01, spent time on the rescue and recovery efforts in the days following the twin collapses or they had labored over a protracted period of time at The Pile or at the screening/sifting site at Fresh Kills.

 A DARKNESS DESCENDS

As 2002 gave way to 2003 it was not long before the first of these patients succumbed to their illness.  The realization that many of the sick were dealing with terminal disease was a huge body blow that sent entire families reeling.  As the patient list grew so did the number of doctors and hospitals specifically designated for the care and treatment of this very narrow list of patients.  The list of “officially recognized post 9-11 diseases” now stands at 58.  Within the tightly knit circles of the FDNY and NYPD, Brothers were watching Brothers die.  A well circumscribed segment of the population was contending with this new, stark reality as a group as well as individual families.  The toll post 9-11 disease was extracting to a still mourning FDNY was perhaps the cruelest.  The FDNY, more than any other City Service, is and has always been a “family affair”.  Sons follow Dads, cousins follow cousins into the ranks and it was not unusual at all for some extended families to have lost several members on that fateful day and by a disproportional rate, more MOS of the FDNY were falling ill, some very seriously.  Other Agencies including the NYPD and PAPD that did not suffer the same death rate as the FDNY did on September 11 were also seeing colleagues develop maladies directly related to their exposure working The Pile over the almost nine months it took to clear that 16 acre site.

For those who weren’t sick, the specter of impending illness was a daunting psychological battle.  There were also other psychological battles, some more difficult to ascertain, with others becoming more and more obvious.  Many other MOS from FDNY, NYPD and PAPD were wracked by the haunting imagery and “survivor’s guilt”.  Others had fallen into the depths of profound depression and there were unusually high incidences of heavy drinking and suicide in FDNY and NYPD.  September 11, 2001 killed and is still killing in a host of awful ways to this very day.

A QUESTION

Somebody asked the other day, “How does a person allow one single day to define the rest of one’s life?”  The only valid answer is, “How could it not?”  That date serves as such a distinct partition between what was and what is and the memories of that experience for survivors and recovery workers alike are forever etched on the deepest part of their souls.  Some memories never fade, they are never relegated to a dark recess of the mind nor should they be.  There seems to be for many an obligation to keep those memories fresh, not necessarily for sharing with others, but merely to preserve the honor, courage and sacrifice that were so much in evidence on that day.

BURIALS AND BLESSINGS, CHURCHES AND CEMETERIES

Given the population density of the NYC Metropolitan Area and the approximately 16 million people who live here, there is no shortage of houses of worship for every creed, denomination and sect.  Cemetery space is just about impossible to secure anymore; cremation has become, as a necessity, the only viable alternative for those who die without a plot or a place in a family plot.  But the houses of worship are plentiful, and the turn out for a funeral Service is large especially when a long time congregant passes.  When MOS pass away they are sent off with full honors befitting the Service and Sacrifice that was such an integral facet of their life.  The days and weeks immediately after 9-11-01 saw a steady stream of funeral Services in churches, synagogues and other sacred halls from Nassau County to Nyack, from Far Rockaway to Farmingdale, from Park Slope to Morningside Heights.  At times it all seemed too much to bear; there is only so much grief a person can live with before they begin to drown in its cold, dark waters.

But each death can be a celebration; a choice can be made particularly when an MOS passes.  By their very nature men and women compelled to work as a Civil Servant, as a Fire Fighter, EMT, or Police Officer, are people who are always prepared to give their life for another.  That is a potent and noble pact they make when they don the uniform of whichever Agency they are about to embark on a career with.

LIFE GOES ON

For us the living, obviously, life has gone on.  It has unfolded in a form and fashion that had never been dreamt about, considered or imagined.  Families have gone on, children have grown up, college degrees have been awarded and countless other of life’s many milestones have been reached by those who lost a mom or dad, a brother or sister or someone else they were particularly close to in the time before September 11, 2001.

For far too many others their lives have become struggles against the ravages of diseases the likes of which they too could never have imagined.  So many live as they undergo rigorous chemotherapy and radiation treatment; dialysis and respiratory therapy.  Some take upwards of 30 prescription medications a day.  Once hale and hardy, full of life, strength and humor are now almost hollowed out husks keeping a private vigil with Death that sits in the dark corner of their room at night just waiting.  Death is patient and sometimes that patience is maddening.

DEDICATION

This was written and dedicated to all of those who were lost on September 11, 2001 and all who have died since of 9-11-01 related illnesses.  They will forever be remembered, respected and honored for their Service and Sacrifice.
May they all Rest in Peace in the presence of their God now that they are Safely Home.

BLESS ALL

THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNSEL

WHO’S WATCHING THE STORE ?
RECENT SECURITY BREACHES AT THE WHITE HOUSE COMING ON THE HEELS OF

ISLAMIC STATE, PRESENT UNIQUE SECURITY CHALLENGES

(Monday September 22, 2014, Washington, DC) If there are any federal officials in the White House and the Secret Service who are concerned with the security of the President, his family, the White House itself and the continuity of government after two security breaches, they should come out from behind whatever bushes they are hiding.  The almost stupefying fact that there could be two serious lapses in security perpetrated by two individual men both within a 24 hour time span, should cause heads to roll and an immediate and thorough investigation and overhaul of the security protocols at the White House and its well-manicured grounds.    How these two illegal incursion onto some of the supposedly “most secured acres” in America leaves some serious questions hanging in sharp relief when held up against reality.  While each event was a different type of threat that they were able to transpire at the White House at all is deeply troubling as well it should be.  President Obama and his family were spending the weekend at the presidential retreat at Camp David and were obviously never in danger but did remark that he is “obviously concerned” that these two events happened.  For their part the Secret Service have announced a review of their existing policies, procedures and practices but many in the intelligence and law enforcement community are skeptical that the Secret Service can objectively conduct such a review.

NOW MORE THAN EVER

As expanded airstrikes have commenced this week with United states and a handful of allied countries targeting ISIL sites both in Iraq and across the border in Syria, intelligence professionals have been warning of an increased threat to our homeland by those sympathetic to the Islamic State (as ISIL now prefers to be called).  Two of our closest allies, The United Kingdom and Australia have each issued nationwide terrorist threat assessments based on intelligence they have received from multiple and corroborating sources.  The Islamic State has gained a prominence for their utter brutality, ethnic cleansing and their ability to control large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria.  They control pipelines and refineries the proceeds from which are used to advance their military arsenal and cause.  Some in the international intelligence and counter terrorism community have repeatedly warned that the “Islamic State is like no other terrorist group we have ever seen before”.   One of the realities of the Islamic State that most troubles intelligence experts is that they have been able to recruit to their ranks young men and some women with
western” passports; the kind of passports that are unlikely to draw attention or increased scrutiny at an American airport.  While there is no way to accurately account for the number of westerners who have joined the cause, most conservative estimates place the number between 160 and 200 individuals and, perhaps, as many as 50 from the United States.

The Islamic State has been the first terrorist organization with a viable global reach to attract adherents and foreign fighters to their cause.  The major concern is that these westerners who have traveled to the war zones in Iraq and Syria might be able to return to their home countries with at least some rudimentary skills in bomb making.  Some believe that the training these westerners are receiving is far more advanced than crude bomb making and that they may be plotting and planning from abroad until they are dispatched back home to perpetrate a lethal mission.

Given this sobering assessment of the current fight against terrorism, it is even more jaw-dropping that a 42 year old man from Texas, an Iraq War veteran, Omar Luis Gonzalez, was able to scale the perimeter fence around the White House and gain entry into the residency before being tackled by uniformed officers of the Secret Service.  He was armed with a knife at the time of his arrest and a later search of his car uncovered 800 rounds of ammunition and y several types of heavy bladed weapons.  Mr. Gonzalez could have been packing an improvised explosive device or some other weapon that could have resulted in a serious loss of life, damage to the White House and world-wide embarrassment for our federal government, the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies who share jurisdiction in Washington, DC.

THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME

Just two weeks ago we marked the tragic 13 year anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.  It was in the wake of that colossal debacle by our CIA, DIS, DOD, FBI, INS and the entire host of federal agencies, individually and collectively, that we realized all too clearly the depth of their ineptitude, dysfunction, and lack of cooperation.

They, all of them, allowed 9-11-01 to happen.  For all the talk of how much safer we are today, we open the weekend newspaper and see that two intruders attempted to gain access to the White House.  Yes, Mr. Gonzalez did penetrate far beyond  the security perimeter and how he was able to manage that feat will be an important aspect of the after action reports and review.

The second individual intent on getting onto the White House grounds was a 19 year old New Jersey man named Kevin Carr.  He drove into the White House entryway at 15th and E streets and removed to move his automobile.  The uniformed guards at that point of entry were able to diffuse the situation in short order.  Mr. Carr was unarmed and posed no serious threat at any time during the episode.  But both of these events beg the most serious of questions and, the American public will not get answers anytime soon.  Now that committee’s and subcommittees in Congress have promised to have a charade of hearings and political showmanship, it is safe to say we may never have a reasonable explanation for what happened here last weekend.

UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

By noon time this Wednesday there will be 193 diplomatic delegations here including 140 heads of state. These world leaders including our President will gather at the UN for its annual General Assembly.  While providing security for this week long event has always been a challenge, a challenge that NYPD has met and perfected over decades, the chaos in the world makes this particular General Assembly that much more potentially volatile both in and outside the UN.  The usual hordes of demonstrators are expected and some of the “Occupy Wall Street” group has already assembled.  Yesterday, New York City played host to upwards of 400,000 marchers for environmental issues.  Despite the enormous, sprawling throng, there were fewer than 100 arrests and the march was generally peaceful.  Of course the UN attracts demonstrators from far afield and has always been considered a “top terrorist target” by the NYPD Intelligence and Counter Terrorism Bureau’s.  Monumental precautions are taken to protect the Assembly at the UN plaza as well as at the various Embassies and Consulates where the delegations will be housed for the duration when not in session.  This can be a logistical nightmare for everyone but this year the inconveniences might be even more stringent than in the past.

THE COMMON DENOMINATOR

It is far too easy and usually ignorantly arrogant to complain about the small inconveniences cause the general public during the week of the General Assembly.  But, if New Yorker’s could put aside their own hassles and stop to recognize that the uppermost leadership of most of the countries on the earth are visiting our City to conduct business, the inconveniences, real and imagined, should shrivel up and blow away.  We New Yorkers know what it is like to sustain a terrorist attack and, if we all take a moment to see the threats various delegations bring with them to our City, we might not get so aggravated and feel so aggrieved.

If there was a singular lesson to be learned by our government and military after 9-11-01 it was that the broad oceans that define our coasts, that the vast distances that have always separated us from the turmoil of the wider world have no significance today.  The hallmark of asymmetrical warfare is for a lowly party of committed minds working diligently to bring death and destruction to our shores and, for most of these groups; “our shores” are defined by the coastal and inland targets contained within our Five Boroughs.

BITING THE BULLET

In many ways tonight is just another routine night for the men and women, the rank and file Officers who patrol out streets, subways, housing projects and all points in between.  They will deal on this night, be they assigned to the ass end of Brooklyn or the farthest reaches of The Bronx as they do every other night day in, day out , 365 days a year.  For many the events that will transpire tomorrow at the United Nations are just another ‘detail’ to make a few overtime bucks.  Some Cops will work barrier detail while others will provide conventional means of protection and security prepared for every and any contingency.

There are precious few certainties in life particularly in a Cops life but one such certainty will nag on every Cop’s conscientiousness until this travelling road show ends and all the international players return to their homelands.  The specter of terrorism was forged in all of our minds on February 26, 1993 and September 11, 2001.  The world has not been and never will be the same as it was prior to those atrocities.  After the death and destruction perpetrated on OUR soil, in Lower Manhattan on a glorious September morning 13 years ago, the “game” has changed; the stakes are higher than they’ve ever been.

The citizens and high profile visitors who will go to sleep tonight in our City do so peacefully as far as their own mortality and is concerned.  Heads of State from the world over can rest comfortably and confident that the fine men and women of the NYPD stand as sentinels, as protective human shields between them and all those who’s designs are to do them harm. In a more better world, dare we not say a “perfect world”, everyone, be they diplomat or dishwasher, bus driver or emissary, would take comfort in the fact that they are protected and that men and women who’s domain is the night endeavor to keep our City safe, sane, and secure.

(Friday May 23, 2014, Chambers Street, Lower Manhattan, NYC)  The world over there are places, some otherwise anonymous parcels of land; others, sprawling acres where the soil is figuratively and literally soaked with blood.  The events that took place at these disparate sites share the commonality of being sacred, of being possessed of a timeless meaningfulness that demands respect and reverence.

Some of these sacred grounds were battlefields, sites of brutal conflicts between warring religions or tribes; some still bare the shifting shadows of genocidal mass murder and still others have hosted evil, the purest evil humanity can imagine.  But we do not need to imagine that brand of evil; we have witnessed it time and again and it is for that reason and that reason most importantly that we set these sites aside in perpetuity.  We maintain these sites as memorials to the events that transpired upon them and the lives lost at those hallowed places.

In our country many of our most revered sites are former battlefields that tell the story of our country and the starkly bloodied chapters representing our darkest days.  On what today is all United States soil we fought a War of Independence, the War of 1812 and a Civil War that almost tore our burgeoning nation asunder.  Antietam, Manassas and Gettysburg are all sacred Civil War graveyards and locales from Wounded Knee, Bull Run and other spiritual sites along The Trail of Tears mark our systematic annihilation of the Native American population.

The most recently designated sacred plot of American soil are the 16 acres that the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center majestically arose from. The loss of life at the hands of Islamic terrorists on September 11, 2001 is unrivaled in our domestic history.  While tens of thousands were able to find a means of egress from the stricken Towers, thousands of others lost their lives in the scorching, steel-melting fires or the ultimate collapses.  Many of the dead were attempting to escape; still others were entering.  Members of Service (MOS) of the Fire Department of New York City (FDNY), the Port Authority Police (PAPD) and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) ascended the stairs in their valiant efforts to render assistance to those above.  Many of those brave souls sacrificed their lives so that others might live.  In all 343 members of FDNY, 37 members of PAPD and 23 members of NYPD were lost.

It is fair to say that there is not a person in NYC or the wider NYC Metropolitan area that was left completely unscathed by that infamous day. Certainly the families of those lost and those individuals who escaped death live with grief that remains inconsolable.  As large as the population of the NYC Metro area is, the “six degrees of separation” principal still applies.  Everyone knew someone, was acquainted with someone who knew someone who had gone to school with, was from an old neighborhood or the numerous other ways we are directly, indirectly and tangentially connected.
*****     *****     *****

Today the two single plot acres from which the Towers each soared are tasteful granite topped mourning ponds in the literal footprint of each tower.  The 1,776 foot tall Freedom Tower is structurally complete with only the infrastructural specifics remaining uncompleted.

Two days ago the long awaited 9/11 Memorial - Museum located under the ground of the former WTC Plaza was dedicated and opened to family members of the fallen.  The controversy surrounding this subterranean “Museum” component of the larger Memorial has been profound and has created a rift within the otherwise tightly knit sects of the WTC Community.  And let there be no mistake about it, there is plenty to be troubled, upset and even, for some, outraged over.

Perhaps the major point of contention in the 9/11 community has been the decision to entomb the remains of the 1,115 unidentified victims within the underground Memorial/Museum.  For some this decision represents an insulting absence of respect and decorum yet others see this decision as a proper internment.  The arguments on each side are quite naturally passionate and valid.

One of the most blatantly insensitive elements of the Memorial/Museum that has roiled all members of the 9/11 community is the presence of a gift shop.  Many feared, as did we, years ago that this hallowed site would one day be just another tourist trap, another NYC landmark to have photos taken and purchase crass, distasteful souvenirs and trinkets.  It is almost beyond belief that the powers that be could be so egregiously emotionally tone deaf by allowing a gift shop to occupy the same space that has been sanctified with the blood of thousands and with the mortal remains of the as yet positively identified deceased.

While it is not possible to accommodate the desires of all members of the 9/11 community, the baseline for consensus should have been the lowest common denominator which, in this case, would have been to treat this 16 acres as a cemetery; a living breathing parcel of soil were the souls of the lost still wander.

There are plenty of apologists for this finished product, many who have no problem with the gift shop or the underground mass tomb of the unidentified.  Perhaps a bit of perspective might alter their thinking.

Many of the notorious Nazi death camps have been restored and are maintained with private philanthropic funding similar to some of the funding that made the 9/11 Memorial/Museum possible. Would it be proper to peddle souvenirs to visitors at Dachau, Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Belzec, Sobibór or Treblinka?  Would it be  appropriate to have a black tie affair to “thank” fundraisers who financed the restoration of these sites of unthinkable evil similar to the “gala” that took place here two nights ago?  The place for such affairs is not at the site but somewhere else. It is for this reason that folks gather after a funeral not at the cemetery but at a neutral location to celebrate the life of the recently buried.  There are countless examples where the reverence and decorum of the site was such that it would forever be unthinkable to use it for tawdry purposes.

As much as September 11, 2001 was a day of shared horror and sadness for everyone in the NYC metro area and across the country, essentially in many important ways it remains uniquely personal for thousands of families, families who still commute to and from work and still see the void, the harsh absence of our Twin Towers.  The Freedom Tower is a beautiful structure and a fine anchor point for the other building that will reconstitute the World Trade Center Plaza.  It is symbolic, not a replacement just as the memorial ponds in the footprints of each tower is a subtle monument to those first victims of a war that we continue to wage today.
