FORMER LAPD COP IS NO ROGUE

HE’S JUST ANOTHER COWARDLY KILLER
Riverside (CA) Police Officer Michael Crain
shot and killed by Christopher Dorner.

(Sunday February 10, 2013.  Los Angeles, CA) Every time the rampaging gunmen bent on murdering members of the law enforcement community and their families is referred to in the media as an “ex-cop” or a “rogue cop” they are perpetuating the myth that this lunatic so desperately wants to have perpetuated. The fact that he once wore the LAPD uniform is not relevant and should not garner any greater attention than any other particular item in this disturbed man’s biography.  In an 11,000 word rant posted on the Internet he rambles through a lifelong litany of insults, disrespect, slights, and unfairness intended to provide his “rationale” for this homicidal spree that has already claimed three lives.  That he is also a former naval reserve officer is in a sense as disparaging of our Navy as his former affiliation with LAPD is to that organization.  Yes, Christopher Dorner served in the United States Naval reserve for 20 years and was honorably discharged but his military experience has no bearing on what he has become and what this private mission of retribution is all about.

No matter what the “tipping point” was for this man, despite whatever wrongs, real or imagined beset him, he is just another murderous criminal targeting innocent people.  That a large swath of southern California is on high alert and up to 50 families of those Dorner railed against and threatened in his twisted “manifesto” are under LAPD protection, is a reactionary posture to his madness not his former law enforcement and military experiences.  Granted, he is likely better trained than the average lone gunman we have become increasingly familiar with.  Sure, he is probably a better marksman, more tactically sophisticated, and better equipped for survival in the rugged mountains of Big Bear Lake but he is just another psychopath.

It is very disturbing and somewhat dismaying to read that many in southern California have been expressing “support” for this lunatic.  The most vocal proclaim that “LAPD brought this on itself”; that after years of “police brutality” the officers of LAPD are finally “learning what it feels like to be prey.”  Perhaps these sickening reactions from a slender segment of southern Californian’s, those already hostile and critical to the law enforcement community generally and LAPD specifically, should have been expected.  Now that these views have taken flight in the various media outlets and the usual rabble-rousing talking heads they consult on matters of “race in America”, the schism between the law abiding and the “aggrieved” law deriding is becoming more apparent.  Sadly this event is morphing into an oddly convoluted airing of racial animosities and issues, matters that have long been obstacles between the public they are tasked with serving and protecting and the men and women of law enforcement.

As a former member of LAPD, dismissed almost five years ago, Christopher Dorner is not in any way accurately labeled as a “rogue cop”. For any cop to be labeled as a “rogue” he would have to be actively employed by a police force.  Dorner is a garden variety murderer with grudges who just so happens to have been a cop.  He was employed by the LAPD for a number of years and ultimately dismissed due to disciplinary or administrative reasons so his alleged grievances are not dissimilar to other killers who “snap” after some negative workplace incident of after losing their jobs.

Based on Dorner’s rambling screed it is obvious that his actions have all been well premeditated with “malice aforethought”, the very definition of homicide in the first degree.  This is where he departs from the modus operandi of other workplace shooters.  In most cases an employee who has lost his job, in his mind due to unfair treatment or other circumstance, typically perpetrates his revenge in a short span of time, often he kills on the same day he was let go by his employer.  This particular man has had years to adjust to his dismissal and apparently he has chosen to use much of that time ruminating, obsessing and fuming over being let go in addition to his other complaints that he claims transpired as early as his years in grade school.

The Los Angeles Police Department has a long history of exceedingly poor relationships with the African American and Latino communities as well as internal corruption going back to the days of Chief William Parker.  There is no denying this fact.  However, to view Dorner’s rampage as somehow fitting or just is to condone his murderous spree.  One commentator writing in a national publication wrote, “The LAPD brought this on themselves.”  This kind of thinking is not only dangerously off kilter, it also represents a measure of animus and utter disrespect for the thousands of men and women how’ve served valiantly, bravely, and within the boundaries of the law for generations.

Every large hierarchical organization including police departments have a certain number of unstable employees, some with profound mental illness, addiction to alcohol or drugs, and the gamut of personality disorders.  Most police departments of any size have had to confront cases of corruption of varying severity, abuse, brutality, racism, and all manner of officer malfeasance.  Possessing authority can bring out the worst in men.  The LAPD is no exception and actually has had a series of high profile incidents that have exposed the raw underbelly of that troubled organization.  Since the days of the infamous Rodney King beating caught on tape and the acquittal of four of the officers recorded delivering that prolonged beating as he attempted to stand up after being pulled over and tasered.   The LAPD has made substantial strides towards better training of its officers as well as improving community relations.  The circumstances that lead to the dismissal of Dorner in 2009 will be “reexamined” by the upper echelon of LAPD.  This appears to be a pacifying act, a gesture to appease the most virulent and vocal of LAPD’s critics.

More disturbing is the sudden appearance of Christopher Dorner web pages and other social media sites supporting this madman’s cause. Such support is indicative of the damage done in the past to the reputation of the LAPD.  Apparrently, his “supporters” are ignoring the fact that  Dorner could have opted to pursue his grievances in a conventional manner using the appeal process.  He could have chosen to take his story to the press or use any number of other means to put pressure on the LAPD.  Obviously, he made other choices and it will be the repercussions of his choices that will forever include him on the list of evil, depraved cop killers.  Hopefully he will commit suicide before any more innocent lives are taken by his hands.

SEAGULL ATTACKS DOVE RELEASED BY POPE

VATICAN LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION:
CONSIDERS POSSIBILITY OF GULL’S DEMONIC POSSESSION
Pope Benedict XVI releasing dove that was attacked

(Sunday January 27, 2013.  Vatican City, Rome, Italy) The meek, fragile white dove is universally recognized as the symbolic icon of peace and goodwill.  Doves are often utilized in public secular and religious ceremonies dedicated to peaceful purposes and services of remembrance. The Roman Catholic Church employs live doves in various events.  Following in the tradition of some of his recent predecessors, Pope Benedict XVI, the earthly leader of the worldwide Holy See, has offered doves up to the heavens on many occasions.  Today was no exception except what is typically a benign gesture turned into a brief but epic battle between what some Catholic officials are interpreting to be the latest terrestrial confrontation between living representatives of diabolic evil and divine good.

As over 3,000 of the faithful crowded St. Peter’s Square to participate in the prayer service marking Holocaust Remembrance Day, they quickly turned from a joyful, hopeful chorus of faithful celebrants into a throng of terrified witnesses to an unprecedented, bizarre spectacle that left many sobbing, trembling and some fainted. It has been reported that one American tourist, Loam "Dirt" Gustafson a retired manure farmer from Churning Gullet Falls, iowa suffered a heart attack.

As The Pontiff concluded the prayer service he released two white doves.  The first dove hovered in the air just beyond the Pope’s outstretched arms before flying high above the balcony on which the Papal entourage stood.  Immediately after the second dove was released by the Pope it was viciously attacked by a seagull which seemed to appear from nowhere.  As the evil seagull pinned the cowering dove against a window pane adjacent to the balcony, the crowd below watched in horror as the gull repeatedly struck the dove with its sharp beak.  For those present time appeared to stand still as some of the dove’s bloodied feathers wafted to the ground.  The seagull was repelled after one of the Pope’s aides using a high-powered, neon green, plastic water gun blasted it with Holy Water.  As the gull became saturated with Holy Water it was seen screeching and writhing in pain.  The crowd was transfixed as the gull began to bray like a donkey before defecating and smoldering before bursting into flames.  Pope Benedict XVI was shaken but uninjured.

This Pope has had several previous mishaps with symbolic dove releases in the last two years.  On two separate occasions doves released from The Pope’s hand flew in terror back into The Papal residence over the Pope’s head.  What transpired here this morning is not being viewed as a similarly benign occurrence.  Monsignor Nunzio Sorentinno, The Pope’s closest aide made the sign of the cross continually as he commented, “These ah dove ah no wanna no troub…I theenk these seagull is maybe sent from Hell. I donna know, capisce”.  It has been verified by The Vatican Public Relations Officer Bishop Luiggi Mastropequa, speaking to a small select group of Catholic reporters that “a Papal Review Council consisting of some of our most eminent Jesuit theologians and biblical forensic scholars was convened shortly after this morning’s horror.  Some are speculating that the seagull was perhaps demonically possessed or, if not, at least disgruntled or very, very angry.  This Council will be looking into the possibility of demonic possession while investigating other more probable explanations for what we all witnessed this morning.”

The Council’s investigation has little tangible evidence to examine.  What remains of the seagull after it burst into flames is “just a small smattering of ashes and a charred feather or two” noted a priest close to the investigation but unable to speak for attribution.  Father Dr. Stanislaw Guy Kremjykz the director of The Vatican Dove and Sacrificial Lamb Medical Center speculated, “The seagull may have had some underlying neuropathology or maybe some avian psychological disorder.  I can’t say at this time.  I can say that the dove that was the victim of this hideous attack was healthy, of good mind and body when he was delivered to The Papal Residence just prior to this morning’s service.  I am deeply saddened to report that he did not survive the attack.  We did all we could for him but the wounds he sustained in the attack proved to be fatal.  I am confident that he is in heaven or at least in whatever annex of heaven proper is dedicated to doves and other flying beings.”
Possibly possessed gull attacking holy dove.

Not all Catholics, be they clergy or lay people, are willing to call this seagull attack the result of demonic possession.  Some like Cardinal Peter Paul Matthew Luke O’Shaunessey the Holy Chairman for Extra-Liturgical Activities and Bingo Enterprises who serves in the Archdiocese of Baltimore commented, “ Demonic possession is an incredibly rare phenomenon and I am not prepared to jump to any conclusions until I am satisfied all other possibilities have been exhausted.  In my tenure in this Archdiocese I have been called upon several times to investigate suspected cases of demonic possession.  In one recent case I found the individual to be clinically messianic, of a very low IQ, and highly susceptible to suggestion but in no way was George W. Bush possessed.  I think Dick Cheney might have been but I was not allowed near him and I am grateful to God for that.”

The reaction to this incredible, perhaps evil event has been varied around the world.  Assorted religious leaders, politicians, pundits, commentators, sinners, winners and loser have expressed their own interpretation of the gull attack.  Predictably age old adversaries have adopted this event to further their own ideology and agenda.  In the United States the hardcore right wing Evangelical Christian Conservatives have adopted the stance that the seagull was likely of African ancestry and sent by vile forces summoned by President Barack Obama.  In a radio broadcast this afternoon FOX News cable personality and overall half-wit Bill O’Reilly himself a self-proclaimed “staunch, practicing Catholic said, “This is what happens when we elect a socialist, allow abortions, take prayer out of our schools and guns out of the hands of our valiant, law abiding citizens.  We can probably expect more of these awful scenes in the future.”

As patently absurd and asinine as O’Reilly’s statement was, there were still more shameful, idiotic comments from others across the globe.  For some unknown reason many of the most out spoken have oddly associated what transpired here earlier as being related to United States politics despite the fact that this was solely a Vatican ceremony and The Pope is a religious leader, not a political figure.   Wayne LaPierre, President of the US based National Rifle Association (NRA) asserted in a press release that, “This attack would never have happened on American soil.  Had any seagull or other predatory creature launched an attack on a holy dove, I assure you our members would have blasted it out of the skies long before any harm was inflicted on The Pope’s dove.  If the Italians were as heavily armed as we are, that damned evil bird would have been annihilated.”

RELIGIOUS LEADERS AT ODDS WITH VATICAN INVESTIGATION

News of the fierce attack on a Papal dove by a troubled seagull has spread around the world rapidly thanks to the never ending news cycle.  As a result just 7 hours from the actual event, there is already a good deal of controversy surrounding this attack.  Even before the Papal Review Council has begun conducting their internal investigation, some prominent religious leaders are casting doubt on the Vatican’s ability to be objective.  Some have expressed concerns that The Vatican may not release their complete findings and that when a final report is issued it will it will be heavily redacted depending what they uncover.

The Right Reverend Buster Lee Shuckster III who ministers to a large flock of strict southern Baptists at his Church of the Redeemer in suburban Waco Texas spoke to a local CNN affiliate today and expressed his concerns that, “Them Catlics is a pretty secretive lot with all their rites, rituals, rules and regulations.  Personally, I don’t trust that whole Vatican crowd, all them Eye-talian priests and whatnot living like they lived in the dark ages.  I am not ruling out the thought that the damned seagull was possessed.  I have seen members of my flock, dogs, snakes, livestock, and my mother-in-law speaking in tongues so I have an open mind.  Still, Baptists are one thing.  Catlics are another breed entirely.”

More than halfway around the world from the dusty plains of Central Texas, high in the Tibetan hills, the Dalai Lama, leads adherents to the Tibetan Buddhist doctrine.  The Dalai Lama spoke from his mountain top temple and observed that, “The dove and seagull are one.  They are one, if not with each other than as living creatures in this plane of existence.  Perhaps, the dove will be reincarnated as a gull and the gull will get to experience another life as a gentle dove.”

From an undisclosed remote location in the rugged terrain that is the Afghanistan – Pakistan border, a top level al Qaeda commander, Halli Walli Hulahoop recorded a message that was secretly delivered to a staffer for Al Jezeera.  The network decided to air a portion of Hulahoop’s remarks after verifying that the voice and pictures on the tape were infact Hulahoop, thought to be the fourth highest ranking member of al Qaeda.  “What the world has witnessed today, Praise Allah, was the righteous jihad of a Muslim seagull sent from on high to smite the infidel dove.  We had prayed that Allah would have sent a legion of devout gulls but, thanks be to Allah, that one gull was able to kill that dove.  I can assure all those in the West who seek to destroy us that there will be more seagulls sent as martyrs and we already have willing goats, sheep, wombats, a squad of mules, and 7 rabid dogs prepared to do battle with the infidels.  God willing, they will succeed.  Besides, I just want them all out of my cave.  It stinks in here.”

THE PENTAGON REACTS

Top officials at the CIA, NSA and DOD scrambled to obtain satellite imagery of the attack at The Vatican.  Lt. Colonel F. Hugh Bahlz issued a statement to the press corps at the Pentagon which read in part, “The United States takes this surprise attack very seriously.  We have put several of our instillations on high alert status.  We need more time to study the satellite images of the attack before we can offer a reasoned opinion of this apparent ambush and we will take actions commensurate with our findings.”

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has been in close contact with his Italian counterpart as well as the top officers at NATO.  He made brief remarks as he shuttled between secret meeting and the situation room here at the Pentagon.  Panetta said, “We take this seriously although we have no idea if it was serious.  We are seriously lacking serious information at this time but recognize its potential seriousness and we will assess just how seriously we should take this apparently serious event.  Speaking personally, as a serious Catholic myself, I am very troubled and seriously concerned that a seagull was able to penetrate Vatican airspace unopposed, unchallenged and, as I understand it, undetected until seconds before the air assault.  The United States government has expressed our condolences to The Vatican and the world-wide sacrificial dove community.  We have told them that we stand with them and any further provocation or attacks will be met with a rapid response.  We are ordering the immediate dispatch of a fleet of drones that will fly over The Vatican.”

CONSPIRACY THEORY

It has only been hours since the attack and already the disturbing footage has appeared on You Tube and other web sites.  The ever ready conspiracy enthusiasts have launched several web sites presenting a wide variety of wacky theories.  The most prominent of these theories posit that the entire attack was a black op perpetrated by the Israeli clandestine paramilitary service, The Mossad.  Lunatics like Glenn Beck, Jesse Ventura and Sarah Palin believe that Israel may have staged this “operation” in an effort to draw America into a military conflict with Syria, Iran, or any other impoverished county within striking distance of Tel Aviv.

Rabbi Shlomo Ira Putzeinburg, a conservative stalwart in the Israeli Knesset countered some of these claims and in a strong appearance before the Israeli press and Matt Drudge emphasized, “It always comes back to the Jews.  Why is this?  Here, on Holocaust Remembrance Day some mashugana, schmuck seagull decides to murder a peaceful Catholic dove and somehow Israel was involved?!?  Oy vey.  This is madness.  Israel would never conduct such a secret operation.  We have reestablished a relationship with The Holy See.  I have been to The Vatican and I assure you that the Jews stand with the Catholics…at least as they are standing.  All that kneeling and up and down, up and down they do.  It’s enough to make an old Jew feel like a crazy shmendrik.  My prayer is that they get to the bottom of this soon.”

DON’T KNOW MUCH ABOUT HISTORY…

…BUT WE SHOULD

(Tuesday January 22, 2013)  Forty years ago today the United States Supreme Court handed down its landmark ruling in the Roe v. Wade case deciding in a 7 to 2 judgment that the right to privacy and due process extended to a woman’s right to have an abortion.  The repercussions and reverberations of that epic Court decision are seen and felt to this very day as abortion remains one of the most polarizing and politically charged issues.  Prior to the Roe decision abortions were illegal and were performed by a wide range of providers in a wide range of environments.  Roe took what is actually a medical procedure out of the hands of “back-alley” abortion providers of diverse, often dubious expertise and ensured that woman seeking an abortion would not be fated to exist in the shadows and on the fringe of accepted sanitary, hygienic, and sterile medical practice.

To fully appreciate the significance of this Supreme Court decision and the persistence and longevity of the controversy that still infuses it one must consider the context, the “times” in which it occurred.  That is true of virtually every issue of today.  Nothing happens in a vacuum of time although the present can often be mistaken as the defining age.  History provides the requisite context to every argument, every issue, debate, and decision confronting us today.  Sadly, for the majority of Americans under 45 years of age, history consists of all that transpired in their limited lifetime.

George Santayana the profound philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist wrote in his Reason in Common Sense, The Life of Reason, Vol.1, that "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."  Santayana's quotation, in turn, was a slight modification of statement by the 18th century British philosopher, Edmund Burke, "Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it."  No matter the genesis of this phrase it represents an all-important truth while admonishing all to keep matters in perspective, to view the debates of today through the prism of their history.

Quotes and adages about the need and value in having knowledge of history are plentiful.  It is absolutely true that in society, governance and politics “everything old is new again”, “past is prologue”, and, “to understand the future one must study the past”. These and similar sayings speak to the necessity of having at least a broad grasp of the history of an issue to acquire the proper context and perspective by which to access it.  A wealth of recent polling and surveys have shown that the majority of Americans born since 1968 have a terribly inadequate and generally poor understanding of recent (post WWII) history with that majority increasing exponentially as those polled or surveyed are younger and younger.  Essentially, young adults who are in their first year at our nation’s colleges and universities have an abysmal lack of knowledge of recent American history.  This paucity in knowledge is a severe handicap for us as a country, a society, and a member of the global community.

UNDERSTANDING NOW BY KNOWING THEN

Yesterday President Barack Obama was publically sworn into office in the 57th Presidential Inauguration Ceremony.  His Inaugural Address which is receiving high marks for its substantive contents and historical references is being lauded as the enunciation of a true “progressive” ideology.  Aside from the lofty oratory and rhetorical flourishes one cannot fully appreciate the words he spoke, the ideals he set forth as goals, and the scale, scope and weight of his second-term agenda without familiarity with the history of some off our most seemingly intractable and divisive problems.  The fact that an American President of African-American ancestry was being sworn in to the highest elected office in our land on the federal holiday celebrating the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, was steeped in late 20th century U.S. history.  Many among us of a certain age had never thought they’d see an African-American President in their lifetimes.

Until 1965 African-Americans were denied the right to vote and segregation was endemic in many parts of the Country. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the southern Minister turned civil rights activist at the forefront of having our Country, by way of our federal government, recognize, grant and enact laws to provide equal rights and non-discriminatory practices for the long oppressed African-American population.  Though the “War Between the States” had been over for 100 years the vestiges of the Old South and the rabid bigotry of the day had systemically denied the African-American segment of our populace equal access to housing, education, jobs and all manner of common services, rights, privileges and courtesies compared to the predominantly Caucasian society into the 1960’s.  The Voters Rights Act of 1965 and all the subsequent legislation that followed was the Nation’s first efforts towards redress and equality for the descendants of slaves. That was not that long ago yet how many people today have no idea of the struggles of the not too distant past?

“History” was not necessarily all that long ago.  To better comprehend and ponder some of the political discourse and discord of today, an acquaintance with our Country’s history since the end of WWII would provide a solid foundation for a broader, more stable perspective perch.  The ferocity of the arguments and the more pronounced sources of rancor, anger, and confrontation in Washington DC over the past dozen years or so can be much better understood by tracing their roots in our history.  The on-going argument over abortion is one such topic.

ABORTION:  SAFE AND LEGAL TODAY…BUT…

Viewing abortion from the narrow confines of today, as a bitter battle between the “Right to Life” hard-core Republican/Conservative/Evangelicals and the “Pro-Choice” Democratic/Liberal/Progressive/Populists, is to see just a sliver of the larger whole.  Some who champion one side or the other today behave as if the “abortion question” fell, as is, into the laps and consciences of Americans out of nowhere.  This could not be further from the truth. To understand the truth about abortion, the long, sordid, often tragic history of women who sought to terminate their pregnancies for whatever individual personal, private reasons prior to the Roe Decision, it is essential to pull the curtain of history and peek behind it.

Women who desired to terminate their pregnancy before January 22, 1973, would find a way.  There were a wide assortment of kooks and cranks, medical providers and charlatans, neighborhood nurses and village midwives, acting as abortion providers. The infamous “coat hanger abortion” was an act of desperation and isolation where a young woman would use a wire clothes hangar as an intrauterine probe to expel a nascent fetus or cause her body to reject the pregnancy.  So many of these women suffered severe septic shock, infections and sustained self-inflicted damage to their reproductive organs that the chance of any successful pregnancy in her future was rendered impossible.  Women died and often died alone and estranged from their families and friends; not too many decades ago the social stigma associated with a pregnancy “outside of wedlock”, was a cruel, powerful motivation to keep a pregnancy secret or to have it terminated secretly.  One just needs to do a cursory Google search to read of the horrors of abortion before it was deemed legal.

As previously noted, the legality of the “right to have an abortion” was decided by the Supreme Court citing the Constitutional grounds to a woman’s “right to privacy” insofar as what she did or did not do with her body and that her right to privacy was an extension of “due process” as codified in the 14th Amendment.  Yet, 40 years out from the “legalization” of abortion the fights and conflict rage on and the anti-abortion forces have been involved in all manner of legislative actions to turn back the hands of time regarding the availability of abortion.  People have been killed over this matter.  The most recent murder was of a physician, Dr. George Tiller, in Wichita Kansas on May 31, 2009.  Some states have no abortion providers due to the aggressive tactics of the abortion opponents.  Yes, there is a long history and it continues to be written today as old debates are re-engaged, reinvigorated by new zealousness, and actually, one’s views on abortion and its “constitutionality” have become a political “litmus test” for anyone seeking elected office or appointment to a higher court as a judge.  This, even though, the last 40 years have established a strong base of legal precedent and Roe v. Wade has thus far survived the ever escalating onslaught to repeal or overturn it.

MARKING TIME, MEASURING “PROGRESS”

If nothing else history provides us with mile markers, points of reference, and a map of the roads that have led us to the present.  Our past contains all the glaring flaws and faults of yesterday as well as the nuanced more subtle forces that fueled the fires that burned for change, which refused to be held at bay by the status quo and moved us all forward. Hindsight, if accurate and true, permits an unvarnished vision of exactly where we have been and why we are where we are now.  That is what history is all about.  It is not about knowing significant dates or arcane facts from antiquity.  Such are the purview of the academic, the scholars who sift through the ages seeking answers and understanding.  The average American need not be scholarly in the appreciation and pursuit of historical context.  It is vital to the present as are the particulars and details of all the multitude of variables and vagaries that constitute the climate we live in today, the landscape we traverse as a People.
